The Salaf preferred the term Zuhd instead of Tasawwuf (which has a disputed origin), however, none of them rejected the Shar’ī intended meaning and Maqāsid of it as they are and inherent part of Sunni creed.
The scholars say:
التصوف الصحيح بني على الزهد، والزهد أصل من أصول الشريعة
‘Correct and authentic Tasawwuf is based on Zuhd (Islamic ascetism) and Zuhd is a branch of the branches of the Sharī’ah,.’
The early Salaf used the term ‘Zuhd’ instead of Tasawwuf, the likes of ‘Abdullah Ibn al-Mubarak al-Turkumāni (181 AH, Hannad ibn al-Sari (152 AH), Imam Ahmad etc.
The Muslim, Sunni, is just, he is moderate by nature and rejects all forms of extremism.
One of the Usūl and principles the scholars mention is:
أن العبرة في الحكم على الأشياء بالمسميات لا بالأسماء
‘The criterion for judging matters is based on their reality and not on what they are called.’
So whereas every Sunni is judged as a Muslim and non-Mubtadi’ (until proven otherwise) and every Shi’ī as a Mubtadi’, yet the opposite can be true i.e. the Dhāhir is just an indicator that can be proven wrong with the actual reality of a thing or someone’s (beliefs).
Having said that:
The one who calls himself Shi’ī, including a Twelver who doesn’t hold Kufrī beliefs and doesn’t pray to Imāms (although extremely rare) = Muslim brother in faith, however, Mubtadi’.
The ‘Sunnī’ who prays like Pīr Baba X, Y, Z and hold other Kufrī and Shirkī beliefs = Pagan Mushrik.
It’s not about Sunni or Shia and name calling, it’s about the reality of matters, it’s about Tawhīd and Shirk. So don’t be fooled by labels.

Quburi Sifat rejecters and deniers of the Jahmite kind have no issues with buried Imams, saints and pirs in their graves listening (and ming to aid) of millions upon millions of people and their duas like as if they are connected to a personal hotline with them (a 24/h one, 7 days weeks a day, as if their saints don’t sleep).
They have no issue that divine attributes, including those that are specific to Allah are attributed to the creation, but they have issues with Ahlul-Sunnah wa al-Athar affirming the Sifat in the Qur’an such as Hands, Face etc.
They have an issue with Allah speaking directly to Musa (a)!

The people of the Sunnah are the saved and victorious sect; they are balanced, a middle path between the Khawarij/Nawasib and Rawafid heretics. Both are extremists, one group due to their hatred of our master ‘Ali (ra) the other for their Ghuluww (excessiveness) regarding him.
